Conte di Savoia was launched on 18 October 1931. Everything went according to plan—at least until the liner nearly exploded on her maiden voyage. Italian Line's 48,500 GRT Conte di Savoia was 814.5 feet long and 96 feet at beam. She was similar to, but slightly smaller than Rex, completed just two months earlier.

There were considerations to use the ship on the South American route as an emigrant carrier with third class only, but due to shortage of money, material and shipyard facilities, the project was shelved. Sadly, the Conte di Savoia was considered a too expensive and difficult task in 1950, and she was sent to ship breakers in Monfalcone.

Conte di Savoia was originally ordered for the Lloyd Sabaudo line, however, after a merger with the Navigazione Generale Italiana, the ship was completed for the newly formed Italia Flotte Riunite.

The S.S. Conte di Savoia was a true floating palace. "Our state room was wallpapered in gold brocade, and all the blankets and spreads were crimson in color. During the trip, we especially enjoyed the company of a very nice Italian priest: Father Rinaldi became our chaperone and proved very helpful when we visited Casablanca and Monaco.

This beautiful ship was the first one to have gyroscopic stabilizers fitted to try and reduce the rolling during Transatlantic Crossings on the North.
